Band News
Welcome to the Leaksville Moravian Church Band page. We hope to be able to
include information here that will be beneficial to you as a band member or potential
member.
Band History:
The Moravian Church regards music as a very necessary part of our church life.
Instruments have been used quite early in our church history for cultural values and
as part of our religious services. The Moravian Church in Salem, N.C. was
organized in November 1771. The first set of trombones was received by the
Salem Church in 1772. Trumpets and horns were added shortly thereafter and
these were followed by valve instruments before 1850. The Salem band is
considered by some to be the oldest continuing mixed wind ensemble or band in
this country. The Leaksville Moravian Church was organized in 1928, but did not
have an official band until approximately 1960. Up until then "The Leaksville City
Band" was utilized for the Church's sunrise services.. At that time the Church's
pastor, Rev. Fussell suggested that the Church start their own band. The local High
School band director, Mr. Fleming not only taught some church members how to
play band instruments, but some of them how to read music also. Our church has
had a very active band since then.
In the Moravian Church, Southern Province, particular emphasis has been placed
on the development of the Church Band. The band plays primarily for the Easter
Sunrise Service and the Christmas Eve Candlelight Service but may also play for
other Church Festival occasions. We are probably best known for our part in the
Easter Sunrise Service. The band plays all the music for the entire service and leads
the congregation to a local cemetery, stopping to play along the way for the
congregation. The service is concluded at the cemetery and the congregation returns
to the church for a large breakfast prepared by the Men's Fellowship.
We normally practice once a week for about 4 to 6 weeks before the Easter and
Christmas services, but we will also call a practice at other times when the band
desires to. We are always interested in new members that enjoy playing Christian
music to join with us. You do not have to be a member of our church to play in the
band, but we always welcome new members to our congregation. We also have
some spare instruments to loan (trumpet, baritone, clarinet, and trombones) for
those that would like to learn to play or to start playing again and do not presently
own an instrument.
If you are interested in joining our church band or just desire more information, feel
free to contact our church office @ 623-9440 or band director Doug Shoemaker

Wow!! It’s hard to believe but it’s beginning to be Christmastime at Leaksville
Moravian again! What happened to this year? As I get older the seasons start
occurring faster and faster. Well, it’s time to start what we have been waiting for,
it’s the annual Leaksville Moravian Church’s Band practice season!!! Well,
maybe we have not been eagerly waiting for it, but it is time for us to begin! Our
practices will be held every Sunday in November and December, beginning
Sunday Nov. 2, 2008 with the exception of Nov. 9. All practices will be held
immediately after our morning worship service upstairs in our band room. The
exact dates are as follows: Nov. 2, Nov. 16, Nov. 23, Nov 30, Dec. 7, Dec. 14,
and Dec .21. All practices will be held immediately after our morning worship
services upstairs in the band room.
Our Christmas Eve Lovefeasts will be held at 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm on
Wednesday Dec. 24, with the band’s prelude beginning at 5:00 pm and 7:30 pm.
All band members should plan on being there at least 15 minutes prior to playing
time. As in the past, a meal will be provided for all participants between the two
services.
This year we have purchased some new stands to help hold some of our music
instruments during practices and performances. Come check them out! As in the
past we gratefully accept any donations of equipment to our band and we would
also like to again extend an open invitation to any church member, their family,
friends or neighbors to join our band family and play with us. You do not have to
be a member of our church to become a member of our band, but we are always
looking for new church members as well as band members, and we currently have
several instruments we can loan to our band participants..
I’m looking forward again to playing our Christmas music with each one of you
and am also looking forward to our Christmas Eve Services. Come and play with
us and remember to keep the Christ in Christmas!
